Commissioning Consortium Proposal
on behalf of the Alloy Horn Quartet, by Dr. Thomas Bough
Thank you for taking a moment to consider joining the commissioning consortium to bring to life a substantial new work for horn quartet. I am planning a 8 - 10 minute, multi-movement work, that the Alloy Quartet will perform at the next International Horn Society Conference in late July of 2018. This remarkable quartet of women have been invited to perform an entire evening concert at HIS 50, which reflects their artistry as a group and the strength of each player.
As a composer, I am deeply honored by the invitation to create a piece to be performed at IHS 50 by this remarkable chamber group. Equally, I am humbled by the willingness of others to support my compositions over the last decade, and gratefully acknowledge the many schools, universities, and individuals who have funded a variety of large-scale compositions, including:
The four concerti were all published by Cimarron Music and were recorded by the Summit Record label on the CD “Concerto’s for Brass: The Music of Thomas Bough.” They are also available on iTunes. You can learn more about these pieces, and all of my music, at www.TomBough.com.
As you might imagine, taking on a project of this size and scope requires a substantial amount of funding. The Alloy Quartet and I invite you to join the commissioning consortium to fund this project. The commission will cost $5,000 to complete.
In return for your support, your name and/or the name of your school, organization, or company will be listed on the dedication page of the score. You will receive a copy of the score and a full set of parts. Currently, completion is scheduled for the early months of 2018. The score and parts will be professionally typeset using Finale notation software.
Briefly, here is an overview of my credentials to create such a piece. Although my DMA from Arizona State University is in Tuba Performance, I have always made the bulk of my living as a conductor, composer and arranger. Although I am still active as a Yamaha Tuba Artist, my teaching load at Northern Illinois University is strictly as a conductor. I have taught Orchestration and Wind and Percussion Scoring at the college level for the last seventeen years. Prior to that, I taught high school band in the public schools of Mesa, Arizona for seven years. I have a number of pieces published by Alfred and Cimarron, plus dozens more recorded by various bands.
